STEPHEN CHICKOS

WILLIAMSBURG – Stephen Chickos, 92, died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 1995, in Williamsburg Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. A native of Stratford, Conn., he moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., where he resided for 62 years. In 1980, he moved to Williamsburg.

He was a member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks.

He was captain of the Auxiliary Police Rescue Squad in Brooklyn, N.Y., where he served for 30 years. During World War II, he gained some knowledge of rescue work and was associated with the Old Civil Defense program under New York City's Mayor LaGuardia. His lifelong occupation as a carpenter gave him knowledge of foundations and constructions of buildings which greatly assisted him in his rescue work.

In the early part of 1951, he was sent to basic rescue camp near Albany, N.Y., for on-the-job rescue training. In the latter part of that same year, Capt. Chickos was asked to take over the command as main supervisor of the 61st Precinct Rescue Unit.

Over the years, he and his unit received numerous awards and commendations from the police commissioner's office, the Auxiliary Police Program and the community. He was personally decorated with a special "citation" from the Police Department. In 1967, his rescue unit was honored by receiving the "Mayor's Award" for their outstanding dedication and services to the city of New York. This unit was the only Auxiliary Police Rescue Unit in the city to ever be presented with such a prestigious award. In 1972, the 61st Precinct Community Council voted Capt. Chickos the "Man of the Year" award for his consistent dedication to his community.

His rescue unit was completely operational and ready for action at a minute's notice to help those in need. Capt. Chickos had personally been at every major aircraft accident scene in the city for 27 years, assisting the Police Department and emergency officials. During the July 1977 blackout, his unit serviced Maimonides Hospital with emergency lighting from auxiliary generators carried aboard the rescue truck. They again received special recognition for their outstanding service. Mr. Chickos and his rescue unit were considered to be the best rescue unit in the city. He was regarded by members of his regular force, the Auxiliary Police Program and the community to be a "living legend" in the 61st Precinct community.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Dorothy Chickos of Williamsburg; three daughters, Helen Reuter, Grayce Jones and Carol Young; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a brother, Joseph Chickos.
