The team from K&B Tree and Lawn Care took first place in the third annual casket races in downtown Beaver Dam on Saturday.
“We made some much-needed changes to our casket after struggling last year,” K&B owner Tim Eilbes said. “We added steering and got our front wheels working right. The guys busted their tails all summer and fall doing tree and landscape work, which probably kept them in shape for the race.”
K&B’s group was one of 15 caskets competing in the race this year.

The casket races are just part of the daylong festival that brings thousands to downtown Beaver Dam to celebrate the fall season. A witches’ dance, costume contest and other activities for people of all ages keep people busy for the entire day.
Witches make their way down South Spring Street during the Beaver Dam Downtown Fall Fest grand procession on Saturday afternoon. The procession features also featured casket racers.
“The Fall Downtown Fest and Casket Races were a fantastic success with beautiful weather and incredible community involvement,” Beaver Dam Chamber of Commerce executive director Tracy Propst said. “From the witches’ dance to the games, food, and all the kids, adults and pets in costume, it was wonderful to see everyone out for quality, family fun. A huge thank you to the 15 business and individual teams who ran as fast as they could in costumes for the casket races, as well as, our sponsors and volunteers who made this event possible.”
The Wayland Academy rowing team took second place in the casket races along with the people’s choice award. Beaver Dam High School Athletics placed third, and Amsted Auto came in in fourth, Propst said.
