Grandma buried in M&M themed customised casket

By Madhurima Haque| 3 months ago

A US grandma's homemade casket has captured the attention of the internet, being in the shape of an M&Ms character.

Mary Stocks Martin from Arizona has been farewelled by family in a uniquely shaped vessel that reflected her sweet and colourful nature, taking the shape of the blue M&M.

Posting a slideshow of the unusual funeral to TikTok, her grandson, Scott Roundtree, shared details of the ceremony and the reasoning behind Martin's request.

Family members can be seen attending the funeral, held on February 18 at LDS Love Lake Chapel in Taylor, Arizona, in brightly coloured and coordinated M&M t-shirts and caps.

A red M&M hat was also left on the casket, which featured the blue chocolate with its eyes closed and hands resting on top of a number of loose M&Ms on its stomach, each engraved with the names of Martin's children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Funeral attendees also showered the casket with M&Ms, according to a local TV news station.

Another one of her grandchildren, Billy Martin, shared with FOX 10 Phoenix about how his grandmother's obsession with M&Ms started.

He shared that Martin worked as a schoolteacher for 30 years, during which time she "used to initial everything 'MSM,' but that 'S,' in cursive of course, looks like M&M," he said.

"The students started bringing her M&Ms, memorabilia and it just turned into something that she reflected on as part of her success as a teacher."

Martin also compiled memorabilia into her own "M&M room" inside her home, and began planning her own unique casket from scratch years ago, which was handmade by her son, as shown in a follow-up video made by Roundtree.

He shared in the comments of his viral TikTok that the casket sat in her house for years before being put to use.

Pictures show the wooden casket carved out into the unique shape of the chocolate, with wooden circles for the specially-engraved M&Ms.

It also shows the inside of the casket, which was lined with M&M-printed fabric, with Roundtree also sharing that his grandmother was buried with the chocolates as well.

Her family shares that she wanted to share her love of the chocolate with the world, with her son William Martin sharing with FOX 10 Phoenix, "She told us before she passed, 'I want pictures of the coffin to go out. I want people to see it.'"

People certainly appreciated it, with many commenting on the sweet nature of the final act.

"That is absolutely beautiful and unique. Sorry for your loss but absolutely beautiful," said one.

"It's the sweetest thing ever. Like what a tribute to a clearly happy woman. The fact that the M&M is also dead makes it really funny looking too," another added.

"Why are the names on the M&Ms making me cry," one shared.

"I can only hope someone loves me enough to do something like this down the line," another commented.
